9/11 - where were you?
On Tuesday 11th September 2001, I was working as Head Cook at Beech House, a residential home for adults with severe autism / learning difficulties. It was only my second day. I had the radio on in the kitchen and heard the news on Steve Wrights Radio 2 show. Not quite believing what I was hearing, I went down to one of the lounges in the home to see the news on the television. I could see the video's as I went down the corridor and was in shock. Then one of the residents, Peter, came running up with a huge smile on his face, grabbed my arm and said "lady, come and watch this great film on the telly. They are flying planes into buildings" Peter had severe leaning difficulties and I cried as I thought to myself "which one of us is better off right now at that moment in time" as Peter couldn't understand the horror unfolding in front of his eyes. To him, it was a film. When the Towers began to fall, again Peter squealed with delight at the next "great bit in the film". At that point, I wished that Peter's view of the world was right and that it was just a film, but sadly it wasn't. I will always remember Peter's reaction and be thankful that he couldn't understand x
